One of the latest and greatest things to hit the market since sliced bread is the fictional work called “The Shack”. This book creates a fictional story of the tragedy of a man who lost his daughter to a child abductor and find evidence that she suffered from a violent death. The main character “Mack” encounters God in a way no one would have imagined. The book is very problematic in that it is filled with theological heresies that are clothed in a fictional story and remain very subtle rather than out right blatant attacks on the truth. It is very easy to defend such a work because it is “only fiction” but the purpose of the book is made know in no uncertain terms on the back cover:
In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant THE SHACK wrestles with the timelesss question” Where is God in a world filled with unspeakable pain? The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You will want everyone to know you have read this book!
Perhaps that statement may have something to do with marketing but the fact is it is being marketed as holding truth that will transform lives. Transform them it very well may but transform them into what is the real question that should be asked. Our very own LifeWay stores has no problem selling this book with a warning “Please Read With discernment”. What the warning should read is “This book does not line up with scripture and should be recognized as having no theological value and does not live up to its marketing”. “The Shack” promotes Universalism, misrepresents the Trinity, and is critical of Biblical leadership among a great number of other things.
Dr.Michael Youssef has written a comparison to 13 lies told in “The Shack” that clearly discredits the book in a solid and Biblical way. Dr. Youssef actually saw this book as a large enough threat to address it in one of his sermons. Dr. Albert Mohler also addressed this recent heresy filled book on his radio program. We need to be careful of what we read and how heresy is disguised. Fiction can be just as dangerous as any other form of writing and just because LifeWay sells it does not lend to its theological accuracy.
